I believe this photo says it all? Not the Punk Eighties, the later years, closing in on the Nineties by this time…but still Eighties.
Before deciding to blog about it, I was just visually dissecting it. How many things can I find that scream 1988? I’m only not sure to go obvious items to most obscure, or vice versa.
We could mix it up and go for something like a Hidden Pictures™ Puzzle from Highlights magazine?
Search for these 80s classics:
- a rainbow
- mixed tapes
- VC Andrews books
- Gund stuffed teddy bears
- a pillow made in Home Ec class
- a stuffed Pac Man
- a Pierrot clown
- a rugby shirt
- a bad perm
- hearts on something
- teddy bears on something (couple chances here)
- ghetto blaster
- hot pink phone with call waiting
Ahh, the Eighties! The pressing questions though, the real unknowns unfortunately, are: 1. WHO? was on the other end of that call?? 2. Why three mugs?? and 3. What songs are on those mixed tapes?? I suppose we’ll never know…
According to the date stamp it was February 5th. According to the internet it was a Friday. There were a couple of mentionables (my word) from that day that I probably was not aware of:
– 1st prime-time wrestling match in 30 yrs – Andre beats Hulk Hogan
– Panamanian Gen Manuel Noriega indicted by US grand jury for drugs
Three movies were released that day:
- The Serpent and the Rainbow
- She’s Having a Baby
- The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Honestly, none of those films were big for me. Six weeks later, Rob Lowe in Masquerade was more noteworthy to me though. This was likely just a chilly, snowy Friday night in February, & I was probably stuck at home while my boyfriend was working at his part time job.
Funny to take a single snapshot in time and think a little more about what was going on in that photo, besides the obvious, first-glance kind of stuff.
Not to mention pondering how much has happened in your life since it was snapped? Especially if it’s an oldie.
Without the internet writing this would have been such a different experience, and now here in 2014 we’re not traveling by flying cars or eating entire meals that are little pills like some predicted. The world has certainly changed a lot though because of the World Wide Web…does anyone even say that? Ha ha.
Apparently the day after this photo was taken the Billboard #1 Song would change to Could’ve Been by Tiffany…remember her? The previous #1 was INXS’s Need You Tonight.
I admit it, I liked the 80s! I have lots of good memories from the 80s. I have lots of embarrassing ones, too. And there are bad ones, of course, but overall, they were happy years. I learned a lot in those formative years. I learned about first love. I learned about lost love. Made lasting friendships that are still going strong, and had fun with my family, especially on holidays and trips.
*Some other 1988 noteworthies:
Former pop singer Sonny Bono is elected mayor of Palm Springs, California.
The 1988 Winter Olympics are held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Microsoft releases Windows 2.1.
The 1988 Summer Olympics are held in Seoul, South Korea.
George H. W. Bush is elected over Michael Dukakis.
Benazir Bhutto is sworn in as Prime Minister of Pakistan, becoming the first woman to head the government of an Islam-dominated state.
AND…Adele, Rihanna and Skrillex were all born!
Funny to go back…even just for a glimpse. Now, back to being a mom…it’s Friday night and my high school age son plays football! Friday Night Lights…back to reality!
